Ultra Running Update: Da Miles

New Year!

Ultra Running Update

When was the last time you physically challenged yourself? Like, want to pass out on the side of the hill your on, but know you still have miles to go regardless? Your body screaming you should quit – all those lackadaisical moments glistening in your vision like a mirage? Your brain saying “we don’t have to do this there is a car, uber, rescue choppers even”.

When your brain is actively throwing out alternatives to continued torture… well you know you’ve found the right spot :).

When I first started this journey running a few miles every other day was Peak Ben. 3 days in a row was territory for questioning life choices, yet in the past 3 weeks I’ve put in 126 miles. I’m no where near where i need to be to run an ultra (I could probably limp through one though). The difference is I can see the path there. My body is at the point where I can pound out 5-8 miles a day now without soreness, much tiredness, or longing for a donuts.

I’ve treated this journey, as I do most of my journey’s, through a continually shifting perspective of what I understand, what I am experiencing, and what I am learning.

Some of my broader takeaways:

Consistency is key. Our bodies are a system of cycles built upon cycles with governing rhythms – a biologic symphony of sorts. When we listen to beautiful music it has a flow to it which appeals to and resonates with our inner symphony and if there is something discordant or off about the music it stands out, often atrociously. Building upon this idea with the concept of hermetic stress (what doesn’t kill you often makes your stronger), and the psychology that it takes two to three weeks to build up a routine that your body dials into I found a nice foundational view on this idea. It is inherent in the word often associated – training. We’re training our bodies constantly – programming it through out thoughts, actions, and feelings and our bodies & minds learn best through repetition. Interrupting the the song with something discordant is just like interrupting the training with a cheat day, off day, etc. Keep the flow going.

Interestingly a series of discordant interruptions can form a new pleasing sound in a song. This is in essence what breaking old routines, patterns, and even behaviors is like for our system. It runs counter to what all experience up til that point had prepared us for. When we are attempting form these new programs, especially ones that interfere with long standing behaviors, is where we encounter the largest resistance internally. It is also the signpost that a change is occurring.

Alignment is probably the root of most pain. Weird twinges, dull throbs, sharp ticks have all cropped up in runs. Sometimes they go away just as wistfully as they arrived other times its groans, oohs and ahhs, until I figure out how to re-align the structure around the pain. This has been the very scientific approach of looking or imagining the internal structure and then yanking, twisting, poking, and rotating things until “pop” and the pain stops. Knee, shoulder, toes, calf, quad, hips, lower back – my oh my how our bodies crumple in the sedentary life. I’ve managed to re-align parts of my body that previously in life were ‘injuries’ that put me down for long periods of time.

Nutrition is the grease for the engine – that includes hydration and electrolyte balance and in general not eating the entire fridge. Your body, which has been taught to keep those fat stores, wont let go of them easy. He knows a guy in the gut who knows a guy in the brain and there is a conspiracy afoot against the new regime. Quelling this rebellion is your first task in your new role as super fit leader dude. For me, intermittent fasting has proved to be the ticket. Eating in an 8 hour window accomplishes a couple of things and even if you splurge and go hard in the paint for that window you are still in good graces with your bodies metabolism which is regulating not just the processing of that glorious food, but also the repairing of parts of the body in the other hours its running. How much and what you eat is a tuning process and running daily allows you to get a feel for what foods affect you positively and negatively pretty quick.

Now i’m doing a weekly 50 mile challenge for running (walking works too!). The intent is this is the next step to 100 miles a week. If I can get that life upgrade i’m pretty sure I can tackle these ultra dreams.

Ultra Update:

Interesting times notwithstanding, The quest of ultrarunning continues. For me, it has never been about actually doing a race, simply the distance and the ability to function as a human on the other side. As winter has given away to spring I’ve found many fewer excuses to get out and run every day and the lockdown has given me a few less to boot. I’ve been doing 3 or 4 days on and 1 or 2 days off on the running cycle depending on the weather (I’m stingy I like the sun) and general body feeling. I’m getting in at least a 4-mile runs and haven’t taken a long run in a while. I have a great circuit next to my house that can go from 3-7 miles depending on your level of desired self-abuse and is mostly single track with close to 1k feet of climb for the full circuit. It has a lot of steep single tracks elements which I really like. Running on flat ground has never really done it for me, but I get a whole different energy on a trail.

For Nutrition I’ve been terribly bad during my break however, I’ve re-adopted intermittent fasting and running every day naturally makes me gravitate towards better nutrition.

Cold showers are daily and dare I say it – almost enjoyable – part of my routine which I feel has helped me with recovery tremendously. If for no other reason than you feel like a Viking champion standing there grinning like an idiot in an avalanche of icicles – the Thorceebo effect. The immuno-boost from cold/hot is the real deal and there is almost a visceral sense of this after you get into the routine. In that same vein, breathwork is key in all of this. Being mindful of your breath, your heartbeat, and how your body moves/utilizes all of its resources allows you to teach yourself while you learn how to improve results.

Awareness, Focus, and Balance.

Be aware of yourself and your surroundings.
Be mindful of where you set your focus.
Seek balance.

As the world’s events have the vast majority enthralled on a scale never before seen it is important to remember and train the basics both mentally and physically.

The State of Things: Its the end of the world as we know it… or is it?

benjamin-c-george-theory-of-information

The State of Things

Its the end of the world as we know it…

*shrug*

One perspective is the math. If we take growth models and apply some of the statistics we have on the corona virus and extrapolate that the contagion lives on some surfaces up to 9 days, is airborne, it takes days-weeks to incubate in a host,  and can infect people before hosts show symptoms then it stands to reason that its been making its way through major population centers from mid-January and at this point will probably end up as ubiquitous as the flu. End of the world? Probably not.

Yet, the end of the world as we know it is a bit more complex than simply one virus making the rounds. If we look at the effects this is having as another perspective there is a lot of interesting takeaways.

Markets: Capitalism has many mantra’s and one is never to let a good crisis go to waste.  Usually, in times like this, we see a run up on Treasury bonds, gold, and investments like bitcoin. Indeed the FED injected 1.5 trillion into the bond market, but it made a little splash and may as well have been a stone thrown into a wave. The reasons could be varied and is more likely a combination of reasons than one specific takeaway. In the lineup, we have a potentially overextended investment sector that lacks liquidity (cash money) to buy up these assets which in a word or two is not good. Another factor could be a general fear of the unexpected as the root cause of this particular crisis is a new flavor and investors are waiting to get more information to guide their next steps. Speculation could continue, but I feel the takeaway here is the novelty of this crisis combined with a global intertwined society has put the entire world’s markets on new and unknown economic ground.

Supply Chains: Where does your TP come from? The vast majority of toilet paper is bought from 3 companies, but where do those 3 companies manufacture this white gold? If you guessed not in the USA you’d be pretty right. If you guessed not in the majority of the developed world, you also are pretty right. The generic medicines that every hospital in the western world relies upon? Without the ability for pharmaceutical companies to rake people across the coals with 1500% markups those have all be off-shored. You’re electronics, the computer chips in your cars, household items? Yup, those all reside in countries where the labor cost (read: slave/child/indentured labor) and manufacturing cost (lack of regulations/safe working conditions/and general oversight) are low. Indeed the vast majority of products that aren’t concerned about intellectual property fall into this category. It is the reason when you type a product into amazon you get thousands of results.

Social – in our ‘modern’ age people’s ability to deal with actual people is dismal in most places and downright hostile often enough that we have all sorts of rules and laws to attempt to ‘protect’. The erosion of the historical community has been happening long before this global hysteria, but it is through events like this where the effects of that degradation are keenly felt. As the constant moving target of what to do is being replaced with closures, cancellations, and warnings the seemingly ever-present distractions of society are being replaced with hysteria. No more events, sports, concerts, social gatherings? Oh my!

Politics: A plethora of bloodsuckers seems perfectly fitting in this current situation. It seems that at all levels of political systems across the world there is a consistent message of ‘we care, but we don’t care’. Rather through indecision, inaction, or over-actions, we’re seeing the host of responses lean to the extremes. In any crisis, measures taken should follow their namesake and be measured. Yet we find ourselves embroiled in a cacophony of a mixed response.

The Global Society: If the above explorations indicate anything it is that we are all connected. Despite that interconnectedness we remain divided as a race of people. Those divisions, those absolutes are responsible for the ineptness, delays, grandstanding, and indecision that is currently magnifying this pandemic into something that is more than itself. It is our archaic adherence to the absolutes we use to define our various tribalisms, divisions, and professed differences that are derailing the various systems of the world that have evolved to be what they are.

Indeed all of this combined suggests that we stand upon a precipice of change even if those changes are responses to the above situations they will have lasting impacts for a time to come. Historically when there are times of burden, great upheaval is more likely to occur. With an election looming in the US a magnifying lens will be focusing on aspects of government and private industry that have worked exceptionally hard to remain outside that lens of discernment.  The gimmick of “look over here not over there” loses significant potency when people can’t get toilet paper to wipe their ass.

It may well be the end of the world as we know it, but the world won’t end just yet
