Ultra Update:

Interesting times notwithstanding, The quest of ultrarunning continues. For me, it has never been about actually doing a race, simply the distance and the ability to function as a human on the other side. As winter has given away to spring I’ve found many fewer excuses to get out and run every day and the lockdown has given me a few less to boot. I’ve been doing 3 or 4 days on and 1 or 2 days off on the running cycle depending on the weather (I’m stingy I like the sun) and general body feeling. I’m getting in at least a 4-mile runs and haven’t taken a long run in a while. I have a great circuit next to my house that can go from 3-7 miles depending on your level of desired self-abuse and is mostly single track with close to 1k feet of climb for the full circuit. It has a lot of steep single tracks elements which I really like. Running on flat ground has never really done it for me, but I get a whole different energy on a trail.

For Nutrition I’ve been terribly bad during my break however, I’ve re-adopted intermittent fasting and running every day naturally makes me gravitate towards better nutrition.

Cold showers are daily and dare I say it – almost enjoyable – part of my routine which I feel has helped me with recovery tremendously. If for no other reason than you feel like a Viking champion standing there grinning like an idiot in an avalanche of icicles – the Thorceebo effect. The immuno-boost from cold/hot is the real deal and there is almost a visceral sense of this after you get into the routine. In that same vein, breathwork is key in all of this. Being mindful of your breath, your heartbeat, and how your body moves/utilizes all of its resources allows you to teach yourself while you learn how to improve results.

Awareness, Focus, and Balance.

Be aware of yourself and your surroundings.
Be mindful of where you set your focus.
Seek balance.

As the world’s events have the vast majority enthralled on a scale never before seen it is important to remember and train the basics both mentally and physically.

Cold weather, cold showers, body composition changes, and a cold.

Progress, perhaps not exactly at the level I want, but on every front i’m making progress. Re-wiring routines to influence behavior is a prococess. Often I read and see advice and motivational videos say do “X” get “Y” Results – this always misses the key compenent that underlies the process and is consequently where people experience the most failure in changing habits, diets, routines, and ultimately behavior. Between the path of x and y is a repeating cycle of will/intent vs old behavior it is a cycle because everyday these two balance themselves. If our continued intent is strong enough we override that old pattern and begin laying the foundation for a new pattern. Some days we slip, but when we slip something interesting happens – it doesn’t wash away all that previous work and intent. Instead, studies show, that it is more of a self-contained map that retains this intent and effort, and with each success and failure we add to the map until it becomes as easy or easier to navigate than our previous map it becomes our go-to pattern. The old map doesn’t disappear, but it is less and less easy to read as all of the new experiences we have are now more tied to the new map. Yet every now and them we find ourselves existing in an old cycles, reading olds maps, perhaps for nostalgia, perhaps a response to something unexpected that our new map doesn’t have a legend for. These trips down literal memory lanes lasts much shorter, but are important reflection points. It is basically a crossroads between the maps, and when you re-affirm your intent to utilize and expand the new map our brains now say -“Ok, new map it is!” – until the next junction, and next, and next, and for some behaviors that have been with us for long periods of time this can happen for years.

Sometimes, I find it helpful to compare this to programming as via our choices we are directly programming not only our experience, but our response to that experience – this programming loop of cause and effect is recorded in our memory. As the choice loop continues to run the equation of choice changes because it is the sum of experience weighed against intent and balanced by the potentiality of that reality.

All that is a fancy way of me saying I haven’t ran this week. 🙂 a slight cold didn’t help. Like tuning a radio station – you get that slight bit of feedback before you find that resonance.

However, I have made a lot of progress on a lot of other important fronts – poco y poco – little by little.

If I can climb these other supporting mountains of change in my life I know the running will be that much easier journey.

#MondayMotivation – We work in cycles, we program our routines into patterns, and patterns into behaviors – interruptions to these cycles is how we change them – like how a rivers course alters over time.

Today was a tired day and I took one circuit at a pretty strong clip and decided to call it and push hard home. So, a bit over 3 miles and 400+ ft of elevation gain, which is mostly steep verticals and ends with a run up a final hill.

Cold is becoming less cold and I enjoy that progress and I did feel the strength return to my legs today as things felt a bit easier all around and no pain to be had. I question if i’ll be able to get to a 50 mile distance  by end of July. Time will tell!

This site has been going through a lot of changes and will continue to as 2020 rolls out. I’m bringing a lot of interesting entertaining, and hopefully thought provoking content and this will be my hub!

On the fun side of things I have turned myself into a stick figure and will live the comic life in the form of RunningMan! Thanks for reading – check back soon!
